On June 4, 2004, Marvin Heemeyer, a 52-year-old Air Force veteran and muffler shop owner in Granby, Colorado, used a heavily armored bulldozer he had modified (dubbed the "Killdozer") to destroy 13 buildings during a 90-minute rampage that caused $7 million in damage. Heemeyer, who had served in the Air Force starting in 1971 and was first introduced to Colorado while stationed there during his military service, later returned to the state where he ran successful muffler shops in the Denver area before moving to Grand Lake. The attack stemmed from years of disputes with local officials over zoning issues and business conflicts, which Heemeyer believed were part of systematic persecution against him. Heemeyer claimed divine justification for his actions, stating in pre-recorded messages that "God built me for this job", "God's will be done through me" and that it was his religious duty to carry out the attack. While the rampage terrorized the community and destroyed significant property, remarkably no one was killed except Heemeyer himself, who took his own life when the bulldozer became immobilized. The incident has since become a controversial symbol, with some viewing Heemeyer as a folk hero fighting government overreach while others see him as a dangerous individual who committed an act of domestic terrorism over what were essentially standard municipal disputes.
